She and her husband, Karl Brown, will open MadHatBallroom.com early next year in the strip mall at 3300 S.W. Ninth St.

“I’m really looking forward to having a place of my own,” Malcom-Brown said, “and being able to implement all the ideas I’ve had all this time that I’ve not been able to do for one reason or another.”

In addition to ballroom dancing classes for adults, the business will offer a youth program for children to learn ballroom dancing, which Malcom-Brown says is the first of its kind in Iowa, and could host ballroom, swing and salsa dance parties geared toward high school and college students. With Brown being a wedding photographer and Malcom-Brown a dance instructor, the couple also plan to rent out the studio’s ballroom space to small weddings, providing several services under one roof.

The goal with all these programs, Malcom-Brown said, is to attract larger groups at lower prices. Studios she has worked with in the past were “always geared towards high-pressure sales,” she said. “That’s not what we’re about.”

Right now the owners are renovating the space and expect to have a grand opening in January. For more information, visit www.madhatballroom.com.
