You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to run this business, but at least Joseph Wimp can say he has helped one.

On April 2, Wimp launched Action Career Solutions (ACS), a resume writing, interview preparation and career counseling business that will take office space at Alexander Grgurich’s Foundry Coworking, a shared workspace in Des Moines.

“This is a very simple business,” Wimp said. “We are trying to help people move forward in their careers and help people who are unemployed get back on the horse.”

After a stint in the U.S. Air Force, Wimp started two businesses while working in Iowa City and graduating with a degree in communications and public relations from Kirkwood Community College. One of those businesses, the inspiration for ACS, was an e-commerce enterprise specializing in resume writing. Wimp, now 29, began in human resources evaluating resumes and conducting interviews. Upon his move back to the Des Moines area in January, he wanted to expand upon simply offering resume services.

“A lot of people will just go onto Microsoft Word and just get a simple resume format or something like that and just put it in a plain bullet-point format,” Wimp said. “We speak to our clients very in-depth to get an idea for what they are looking for in a career. We don’t just get an e-mail from them and then just throw everything into a Word document.”

He has two part-time workers and charges between $29.99 and $49.99 for interview preparation and $75 to $300 for resume writing, depending on the wealth of information for each client.

“It’s a service that I don’t think could be any more valuable, especially as we try to climb out of this recession,” Wimp said. “In this economy, every single person needs to do everything they can to ensure their chances as a candidate.”

Wimp doesn’t plan for ACS to be the sole source of his income, instead doing it more for the fun of helping people ranging from the fresh-out-of-college newcomer to the experienced former NASA employee he helped write a resume and get hired.

“Every resume is a different person,” he said. “It is just really interesting thinking about where they have been in their career and where they would like to go. We’re helping them tell their story in a one-page format.”
