NOTEBOOK: Numbers show ‘Hamilton’ didn’t miss its shot in D.M.

The three-week run of the blockbuster musical “Hamilton” in Greater Des Moines ended last weekend. If you missed the Alexander Hamilton vs. Aaron Burr tale, you certainly had to notice the extra activity in downtown during its run June 27-July 15. 

Des Moines Performing Arts officials were kind enough to share some numbers that provide a snapshot of what the musical brought, including:

  • 65,000 spectators Des Moines Civic Center.
  • Tickets sold in 48 states, Canada and Guam.
  • 80 individuals in the performing company.
  • 24 performances.
  • 5,832 guest services staff hours.
  • 37,000 beverages sold.


One final note: Iowa had its own Alexander Hamilton, sort of. Alexander Hamilton Swan served in the Iowa Legislature from 1870 to 1872, representing Warren County, according to the Iowa Legislature website.
