The United Way of Central Iowa’s 21-day Equity Challenge kicked off this week and provided participants with a variety of resources to learn more about racial inequity. Here were some of the resources I found most powerful:

  • VIDEO: Growing Pains from TEDxYouth@Davenport — This video was powerful to me because it’s a reminder of the important perspectives of youths. These teens talked about racism in no uncertain terms – they didn’t beat around the bush. The raw experiences they shared in their performance should inspire us to rethink how we talk about racism with everyone, but especially kids.
  • READ: 5 mind-blowing realities about race (that white people may not know) — This piece, along with others shared in the challenge, explains that race is a social construct. There are very few scientific differences between different races. It’s only our social and cultural structures that have separated us.
  • TEST: Project Implicit — It’s one thing to hear about implicit bias and even to generally understand it. It’s another thing to be shown your own biases. This test, created by Harvard, exposes the implicit bias we each hold, meaning we all have different test results after taking it.
