The news organization used the most recent three-month averages of nonfarm payroll employment from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to compile a map showing how long it will take each state to reach pre-pandemic levels of employment. According to this analysis, Iowa is one of eight states that could take the longest to reach those levels. Utah and Idaho are the only states above their February 2020 nonfarm employment levels. California has the largest monthly increase in nonfarm payroll employment, while North Carolina saw the largest monthly decline. The interactive map shows that Iowa has 62,500 fewer nonfarm jobs than it had in February 2020, but has shown a three-month average in job growth of 3,200 jobs.
