One of my favorite scenes of all time is from the film “A Beautiful Mind,” in which Russell Crowe, in character as the brilliant mathematician John Nash, rips into a competitive classmate at a soiree with: “There could be a mathematical explanation for how bad your tie is.” So I enjoyed this article about how trying to make a hipster countercultural statement — wearing different clothes, experimenting with a new hairstyle, or even trying unconventional makeup and grooming products — can result in ending up looking more or less identical to millions of others who have made the same choices.
