ONE GOOD READ: Lessons from states that got tax reform right — and 1 that didn’t
Will Iowa’s efforts at tax reform lead to an improved economy or financial ruin? A new report from the Tax Foundation on state tax reform focuses on initiatives from three states and one district that successfully implemented improvements to simplify the tax code — in addition to highlighting Kansas’ epic fail. The report details how Utah, Indiana, North Carolina and the District of Columbia lowered tax rates, broadened tax bases, and simplified their tax structures. In some instances, the reforms were phased in over time to avoid budget problems. As Tax Foundation Senior Policy Analyst Jared Walczak has noted, Iowa’s tax reform plan, while not perfect, makes a number of significant improvements.
