United Way of Central Iowa’s Central Iowa Works will host representatives from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago today for a roundtable discussion on increasing the quality of jobs for low-wage workers. With low unemployment, employers regularly voice their challenges in recruiting and retaining quality staff, while many Central Iowa workers struggle to get by. “Examining job quality is a promising opportunity to help employers attract and retain employees while also improving the economic status of workers in a win-win scenario,” said Pat Steele, director of Central Iowa Works. Fifteen members of the Central Iowa business community representing government, higher education, health care, nonprofit, restaurant and labor will discuss their experiences as part of a national research effort. A formal report of the Federal Reserve’s findings from meetings across the country will be released later this year.
