Ankeny competed against 21 other cities nationwide to be named to the founding class of Playful City USA communities in 2007. The city attained honorable mention status and a $5,000 grant at KaBOOM!’s Playful City USA Grant Awards Show on Jan. 8. The grant will be used to establish Ankeny’s Annual Play Day.

Ankeny achieved Playful City USA status in November, on the involvement of citizens during the playground design process (for the past two years allowing families to vote on the plans) and Summerfest (a four-day event that includes activities such as games, dances, a talent show and a fireworks finale).

Participating cities had to submit an application and post a three-minute video to be judged online to be eligible for the grants. Ankeny’s video, “Play at Any Age,” captured nearly 900 votes. Winners were determined by the results of the online voting and consideration by the KaBOOM! organization.

Atlanta, East Cleveland, Ohio, and Longview, Wash., were named to the founding class and received an award of $25,000.
