Principal Financial Group Inc. has eliminated approximately 75 positions in its Principal Global Investors division, a move that the company said will better align expenses and resources with the current economic environment.

“Market conditions continue to create pressure and challenges for all asset managers, including Principal Global Investors,” the company said in an e-mailed statement. “We’ve adapted to the changes as business opportunities continued to decline over recent months.”

Principal cut 550 positions in December, 300 of which were in Des Moines.

It has about 8,000 employees in Des Moines.
