The Aetna Foundation is partnering for a third year with the Des Moines Area Religious Council to provide free fresh produce to Greater Des Moines residents who face food insecurity. The initiative, Project Fresh, will distribute fresh produce on specified dates in July at 13 DMARC partner food pantries and the DMARC Mobile Food Pantry site at DART Central Station downtown. The Aetna Foundation provided $12,000 to DMARC to purchase fresh produce this year. In its first two years, produce was distributed from a single location, the Polk County River Place parking lot, but the program will now offer more distribution points to provide greater access. Food insecurity is one of eight focus areas outlined by United Way of Central Iowa in its recent OpportUNITY Plan for reducing poverty in the region.
