BACKGROUND and UPDATE: The West Des Moines Plan and Zoning Commission this week deferred approval of a site plan for a new warehouse and storage buildings for Allied Construction Services Inc. so that architectural issues could be addressed, according to Lynne Twedt, the city’s community development director.
The project is expected to be discussed Monday by the City Council, which earlier this summer approved a phased site plan that allowed grading to be done and footings to be poured.
Twedt, in an email, wrote that the council will be asked to modify a condition of approval because the site doesn’t yet have water to it.
“It is steel frame construction, thus the Fire Marshal is comfortable with construction continuing but no occupancy until water is to the site,” Twedt wrote.
Allied Construction Services has outgrown its space at 2122 Fleur Drive in Des Moines, said Steve Munger, vice president of the firm founded in 1950 by Robert Maddox. “We are landlocked there.”
Munger said plans call for the company to keep its offices at the Fleur Drive site but move its warehouse and storage facilities to West Des Moines. He said the move will allow the company to park its trucks inside. At the Des Moines propertythe trucks sit outside overnight, and in the past they have been vandalized, Munger said.
“This will be a much better facility for us,” he said.
The company bought the West Des Moines land in late January from Hurd Willow Creek LLC, paying $828,349 for 6.7 acres, real estate records show.
Munger said he expects construction to be completed by October.
According to its website, Allied Construction Services has branch offices in Bettendorf, Omaha, Peoria, Ill., and Kansas City, Kan. Work the company does includes heavy- and light-gauge metal framing, insulation, stucco, plastering, drywall assemblies, acoustical ceilings, specialty ceilings, access flooring and operable walls.
