Another building in Des Moines’ Auto Row area is set for a historic rehabilitation. Plans were presented Jan. 12 to the city’s Urban Design Review Board to convert the two-story building at 1417 Walnut St. to first-floor retail, with eight apartments on the second floor. The building was once a tire shop and publishing house, according to a city staff report. The project includes indoor parking. Tim Rypma, Paul Cownie and Jeremy Cortright, operating as Bronson Partners, proposed the rehabilitation. According to the staff report, the building was built in two phases, the west half in 1924 and 1925 and the east half in 1928, when a light well and central staircase was added. The apartments will be arranged around the light well. The cost of the project is estimated at $4 million.
