Retailers might find light on Black Friday

With Black Friday, the traditional opening day of the Christmas shopping season, just two days away, many retailers are hopeful that lower gasoline prices may have left a lot of consumers with extra spending money in their pockets, CNNMoney.com reported.

Nearly 128 million people said they will shop on the Friday, Saturday or Sunday after Thanksgiving, according to a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation (NRF). Of those 128 million, 49 million said they would “definitely head to stores” while 79 million said they would decide after seeing the retailers’ deals.

And although that number is down from last year’s 135 million predicted Black Friday shoppers, the NRF called the number a “welcome surprise” after months of suffering retail sales.

“Retailers realize that low prices will get consumers into stores this holiday season, and this could be the most heavily promoted Black Friday in history,” NRF Chief Executive Officer Tracy Mullin said in a press release.

NRF said it plans to release the results of its actual Black Friday weekend survey by 3 p.m. Iowa time on Sunday.
