The Rural Mainstreet Index (RMI), covering economic activity in small towns in Iowa and nine other states, was unchanged in March from February’s strong 59.6. The index is based on a scale of 0 to 100. The economic confidence index, which reflects expectations for the economy six months out, rose to 63 from February’s 60.3. Iowa’s March RMI advanced to 58.5 from February’s 57.9. The state’s farmland price index climbed to 71.3 from 68.1, and the new hiring index bounced up to 61.3 from 51.2.
