Simpson College names Hannah-Jones 2026 Carver Medal recipient
Simpson College announced Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and educator Nikole Hannah-Jones will visit campus on Thursday, Jan. 29, to receive the George Washington Carver Medal for the 2025–2026 academic year. The honor recognizes individuals whose achievements reflect Carver’s legacy of curiosity, courage, service, and humanity. A native of Waterloo, Hannah-Jones is the creator of the 1619 Project and a leading voice on racial equity and American history. She currently serves as the Knight chair in race and journalism at Howard University and founded the Center for Journalism & Democracy. The event will feature a 5:30 p.m. dinner by invitation and a 7 p.m. public panel discussion at Simpson’s Smith Chapel.
