The food drive is the largest single-day food drive in the nation. Des Moines area residents can participate by setting out healthy, non-perishable food items that are unopened and in-date out for collection wherever your mail is collected. Postal carriers will be collecting donations Saturday and bringing an estimated 20,000 pounds of food to the DMARC Food Pantry Warehouse. Volunteer groups are needed to help sort food collected during the drive throughout next week. “This past year, a record 80,000-plus people received food assistance from the DMARC Food Pantry Network,” said DMARC CEO Kathy Underhill in a prepared statement. “This kind of record need requires a community-wide approach and Stamp Out Hunger is one of the easiest ways to make a difference.” Most needed items include peanut butter, whole-grain cereals and fruit canned in its own juice. Residents can also make a donation to the Stamp Out Hunger effort online.
