The Stanley family of Muscatine and Coralville-based Hawkeye Hotels are the 2024 recipients of the Community Enhancement Awards from the Iowa Architectural Foundation, according to a news release. The foundation each year honors people and organizations outside the architectural profession who have made notable contributions by supporting the field or showing leadership in historic preservation. Hawkeye Hotels received the Community Enhancement Through Historic Vitalization Award for its work on the century-old Hotel Fort Des Moines in downtown. “Their investment in recreating the hotel’s original, sumptuous lobby is a labor of love,” said Thomas Leslie in a prepared statement. Leslie is a University of Illinois professor who served on a jury for the awards. The Stanley family received the Community Enhancement Through Architecture and Design Award based on architectural investments dating back 80 years and beginning with Max Stanley, co-founder of HON Industries, which is now HNI Corp. The Stanley Center for Peace and Security opened a new facility in Muscatine in 2023 that reflects the family’s commitment to environmental stewardship, the news release said. The family’s philanthropy has also enhanced the University of Iowa. A ceremony for the winners is planned at Curate in Des Moines on Sept. 23.
