The Ames Chamber of Commerce is launching a workforce retraining program to help educate and train people for high-skilled jobs and help employers fill gaps in their workforces. The Story County COVID-19 Workforce Retraining Initiative was approved by the Story County Board of Supervisors in August to support the employment needs in the county. More than 400 people will have the opportunity to participate. The estimated cost of the program is $192,400 a year and will be paid in part with Future Ready Iowa and American Rescue Plan Act funds. The total amount funded over the 3½ years is estimated at $610,450. The program will take place at the Des Moines Area Community College campuses in Ames, Boone and Ankeny. “The vision to retrain Story County residents and support employment is inspiring, yet a natural course of action,” said Nikki Fischer, director of workforce and diversity at the Ames Chamber of Commerce. “This Story County COVID-19 Workforce Retraining Initiative acts as a reinvestment to our community, local economy, and residents.” Upcoming classes include manufacturing production technician certification, certified nursing assistant, welding and construction. The program also provides resources to help with wraparound care, such as transportation assistance and child care, and participants will be offered a stipend. An informational meeting for the manufacturing session, which begins in December, is scheduled for 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, at the Ames Chamber office, 304 Main St. No registration is required.
