Lithia Motors Inc., which owns and operates about 100 automobile dealerships across the United States, including several in Central Iowa, has announced that it will close 15 more locations. The move follows a June announcement that the Oregon-based company planned to sell 15 dealerships.

Lithia has informed the city of Omaha that it plans to close a Ford dealership there on Dec. 16. The company closed a used-car dealership in Hiawatha, near Cedar Rapids, in October after operating it for only six months.

In Greater Des Moines, Lithia owns Acura of Johnston, Audi Des Moines, BMW of Des Moines, Mercedes-Benz of Des Moines, Assured Used Car and Truck in Johnston and Lithia Volkswagen of Des Moines.

In the midst of a severe downturn for the American car industry, Lithia said new-vehicle sales at dealerships open for at least one year were down 25.1 percent for the quarter ended Sept. 30 compared with the year-ago period. The company reported a loss of $2.4 million for the quarter.
