After becoming a certified personal trainer and taking a more organic, holistic approach to life, Kimberley Jackman is sharing her mission with Central Iowans at her new business, Studio 305.

“I wanted it to be something where I could teach morning, noon and night,” she said.

Jackman started teaching fitness classes in 2004 for Ankeny School District Adult Education Classes. She eventually broke off on her own, offering Simply Fit classes a couple hours a week in a rented room at a local church.

In October 2007, Jackman “took a chance” and signed a lease, using her own retirement money to fund the project.

“Now I can sell my mission in life,” she said. “I am offering more than exercise classes; it’s healthy living and inspiration. I could not do that one hour a week.”

Jackman moved 13 of her participants with her to the 305 S.W. Walnut St. location in Ankeny and began remodeling and decorating, with help from family and friends.

Panels depicting four of the “elements” recognized by ancient philosophers (water, fire, wind and earth) hang in the studio windows. Each of the elements has a strong meaning, both emotionally and physically, Jackman said.

Studio 305 is situated next to a dance studio and dance supply store, but it was the affordable rent and the space available in the 2,600-square-foot building that she found appealing.

Within the studio, there is open space for fitness classes, an office for Jackman, a loft area where child care is offered during select times and a separate workout room with weights and exercise equipment.

“It’s not one of those Ken and Barbie places,” Jackman said. “It is private and people feel comfortable.”

In December, public classes began, including cardio, Pilates, dance, strength training and toning. Studio 305 also has classes designed for specific age groups, a massage therapy program and discussions on healthy living (to learn about things such as smart grocery shopping and eating right). With Studio 305’s slogan, “a road to a better life,” Jackman hopes to promote healthy living to Central Iowans, from stay-at-home moms to the elderly.

As membership increases, Jackman plans to offer more classes at Studio 305, including some outdoor activities in the spring and summer.
