A report commissioned by Iowa’s United Way organization says 31 percent of Iowans do not make enough to pay for their basic expenses — a figure that mirrors an earlier finding in Polk County and coincides with local efforts across the state to increase the minimum wage. In addition to 12 percent of Iowans below the federal poverty line, another 19 percent of working Iowans are one setback away from financial catastrophe. In a statement released this morning, the report’s acronym ALICE — which stands for Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed — was used by Deann Cook, United Ways of Iowa executive director. “ALICE is in our coffee shops, convenience stores, and taking care of our youngest and oldest citizens. She is also one medical crisis or car repair away from total financial emergency,” Cook said. A different report, with a similar conclusion, is expected to be released next week by the Iowa Policy Project.
