Urbandale is considering the addition of a firefighters’ training facility on the southeast corner of the city’s 3.8-acre fire station property. Construction of the proposed 1,496-square-foot building at 3927 121st St., would be funded through a partnership among the Urbandale, Clive and Windsor Heights fire departments, said Jerry Holt, Urbandale’s fire chief. Holt said though some federal stimulus money may be allocated for the renovation of existing fire stations, none has been set aside for the construction of training facilities. On April 13, the Urbandale Planning and Zoning Commission recommended that the City Council approve a site plan for the project. The council is expected to vote on the matter today (April 20), and Holt said the bidding process for a contractor should begin in the next few weeks.
