West Des Moines has received a $50,000 Main Street Iowa grant to help finance the $200,000 restoration of the city’s historic city hall in Valley Junction. Iowa Department of Economic Development Director Michael Tramontina and Sen. Tom Harkin announced the award Thursday as part of $617,000 in grants to development projects in 14 cities. The awards are a mix of federal and state funds and are given in the form of challenge grants intended to trigger local investment.

California Attorney General Jerry Brown filed a lawsuit Thursday against three Wells Fargo & Co. affiliates to recover $1.5 billion for California investors who he claims bought auction-rate securities based on “false and deceptive” advice, mainly that they were as good as cash, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal reported. Auction-rate securities are investments with long-term maturity dates, such as bonds, that investors can sell at weekly or monthly auctions. Those auctions came to a virtual standstill due to the financial crisis, and Brown claims in the lawsuit that as a result nearly 2,400 state residents no longer have access to $1.5 billion. A Wells Fargo spokesman said the company could not be held responsible for the effects of the recession on its clients.
