The Technology Association of Iowa and LWBJ Financial presented the annual Prometheus Awards this week to honor top high-tech businesses and individuals. Awards were given in 19 categories. Iowa Telecommunications Inc. was named best IT service provider, EquiTrust Life Insurance Co. was named best user of technology, Caleris was named top growth company of the year and Frank Russell of GeoLearning Inc. was named CEO of the year in the large company category. Drake University Law School’s 72nd annual Supreme Court Celebration will culminate with a banquet on Saturday at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown. Drake alumnus Stephen Rapp, prosecutor for the United Nations Special Court for Sierra Leone, will deliver the keynote speech. Scott Eltjes has joined Bankers Trust Co. as senior vice president of development and investment management. Eltjes has nearly 20 years of experience in the investment management and financial services industry, most recently as CEO of WB Capital Management Inc.

General Motors Corp.’s auditors have raised concerns about whether the automaker can continue to survive without filing for bankruptcy, the Associated Press reported. In the past three years, GM has racked up $82 billion in losses. It has received $13.4 billion in federal loans, but is seeking at least $30 billion from the government as it tries to go through a restructuring plan that includes laying off 47,000 workers worldwide by the end of the year and closing five more U.S. factories. The company must have signed concession agreements from debtholders and the United Auto Workers union by March 31 to show the government that GM can become viable again.

The annual Live Healthy Iowa 100-Day Wellness Challenge is halfway through, with Iowans logging 434,455 hours of activity and reportedly losing a total of 66,623 pounds. More than 50 communities as well as 173 businesses and 56 schools are participating. Business highlights include Casey’s General Stores Inc., which has 158 participants who have logged 4,074 hours and lost 1,225 pounds. For more information, go to www.livehealthyiowa.org.

Interim Dean Pam White is the sole finalist for dean of the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University. She will go through a series of campus interviews after spring break and a decision will likely be made by mid-April.
