Toro plans a move to Ankeny

The Ankeny City Council will have a public hearing April 2 to consider a variety of development incentives for the proposed Toro Co. distribution center.
Toro, which manufactures a range of lawn and turf equipment for contractors and residential users, announced Monday that it would team with Ryan Companies US Inc. to develop a 450,000 square-foot distribution center.
Under the proposal, Ryan would purchase about 30 acres at the southwest corner of Delaware Avenue and Northeast. 54th Street, build the structure and lease it to Toro. Ankeny Economic Development Director Curtis Brown said the development could benefit from being placed in a tax increment finance district over 10 years and could receive the equivalent of a tax abatement. Additional incentives could be provided if Toro decides to enlarge the facility or extend its lease with Ryan.
The distribution center would be one of the largest in Greater Des Moines. It could be completed later this year and would employ about 20 people. Toro and Ryan, both with corporate headquarters in Minnesota, have been partners on another project. Ryan has a regional office in West Des Moines. When the distribution center is completed, Toro plans to move operations from current facilities in Lakeville, Minn., and Beatrice, Neb., the company said in a news release.
The new location will primarily distribute Toro- and Exmark-branded equipment to distributors, dealers and Home Depot Inc. stores in the United States and Canada, the company saidThe Ankeny City Council will have a public hearing April 2 to consider a variety of development incentives for the proposed Toro Co. distribution center.
