After a decade of dreaming and planning, two local men are nearly ready to open an upscale nightclub in the basement of the Teachout Building, 500 E. Locust St.

The Underground will operate from 5 p.m. until 2 a.m. five nights a week, with live music on Fridays and Saturdays, according to Kevin Wahlert. He manages the bars at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino; his partner and brother-in-law, Jerrad Atkin, manages Locust Tap.

Architect Kirk Blunck owns the Teachout Building and the building housing Locust Tap, and is designing the 3,000-square-foot nightclub. “We got to talking with Kirk, and he told us the space was available,” Wahlert said.

At one point, the basement was home to the East Des Moines Men’s Club. “It’s been several different things over the years,” Wahlert said. “We want to make it something out of the ordinary.”
