United Way tops its 2007 goal
United Way of Central Iowa announced Thursday that it surpassed its 2007 fund-raising goal of $24.5 million, bringing in a total of $25,004,315 and setting a record for United Way campaigns in Greater Des Moines.
Contributions increased by $2.4 million, a 10.6 percent jump above the record set in 2006. The rise in total giving marks the 21st consecutive year of annual increases, and the amount more than doubled the figure from 10 years ago, in 1997, when the United Way received $12,377,506.
“We plan to invest these contributions strategically to continue our role as a catalyst for change and making a difference in people’s lives,” said Shannon Cofield, president of United Way of Central Iowa. “The $2.4 million increase this year presents an opportunity to further address underlying causes to our most serious issues.”
Urgent needs, such as improving school readiness for young children, helping youths achieve their potential in school and ensuring that families become economically stable, will be addressed with this year’s investment of $25 million, Cofield said.
Nationally, Central Iowa has the fastest-growing campaign, with a 45 percent rise during the past five years and more than a 100 percent increase since 1997. Central Iowans also lead the nation as the most generous United Way contributors, giving $57 per capita.
