United Way, Variety collaborate on Vision to Learn program
United Way of Central Iowa has partnered with Variety – the Children’s Charity of Iowa to “fund the need” and create awareness for Vision to Learn, a program that provides free eyeglasses for low-income students. The organizations unveiled the partnership at Variety’s premier event of the summer, Polo on the Green. More than $19,000 was raised at the event to benefit children who have vision needs to improve students’ chances for success. United Way initially partnered with Prevent Blindness Iowa In 2017 to bring the program to Central Iowa. Mobile clinics staffed with trained eye care professionals bring needed services directly to the Greater Des Moines community through the program. “Every child should have the ability to see in order to learn,” said Sheri McMichael, executive director of Variety. “Collaboration makes us better, and it is our hope that by bringing together the resources of United Way and Variety, we will bring quality vision care to thousands of students who would not otherwise have an opportunity to receive an eye exam and glasses.”
