The Urbandale City Council gave final approval March 11 to a zoning change necessary for the proposed Heritage Park commercial and retail development at the northwest corner of Interstate 35/80 and Hickman Road.

Developer Robin Seiser has been negotiating the purchase of about 39 acres for the development from Living History Farms, which plans to use proceeds for a permanent operating endowment.

Once the sale is complete, Living History Farms will retain about one acre where archeologists plan to remove the remnants of a homestead believed to have been occupied by a son of Martin Flynn, the 19th-century railroad man, surveyor and farmer who originally owned the site where the interpretive farm museum is located.

Once the dig is complete, the remaining land will be turned over to the developer, said MD Isley, interim executive director for Living History Farms.

The site has been rezoned to planned unit development, which means it can accommodate big-box stores as well as other retail and commercial operations. On recommendation of the city’s planning and zoning commission, Seiser must build double turn lanes off of Hickman Road in order to avoid traffic congestion.
