According to a staff report to the council, the city has attempted since 2010 to locate land for a community park in an area west of Interstate 35 and south of the Raccoon River. One potential park property sold to a developer while the city was negotiating its purchase, according the report. The parcel now under consideration is located east of Union Lane and north of 105th Street. The land is described as a landscape of rolling hills, timber and 100 acres of farm ground. The city would complete the purchase and take possession of the land in 2021, with development of the park occurring over 10 to 20 years. With interest, the total purchase price is $2.1 million. Meanwhile, the City Council also will vote on an expansion of the Alluvion Urban Renewal Area, which was created to accommodate public improvement projects stemming from a Microsoft data center near Iowa Highway 5 and Veterans Parkway, and to create the Osmium Urban Renewal Area, where the city plans to spend up to $122 million on road construction and other infrastructure that will open more than 5,000 acres to development, including the community park.
