The Weitz Co., a full-service construction company founded in Des Moines in 1855, is celebrating its 170th anniversary this year. The company, founded by Charles Weitz, began as a small carpentry shop. Over the years, Weitz has expanded its expertise across several sectors including commercial, industrial, aviation, senior living and student housing.

Weitz, headquartered at  611 Fifth Ave. in Des Moines, has built several buildings in the Greater Des Moines area including the Hotel Fort Des Moines, 1000 Walnut St., that was completed in 1919; the Hilton Des Moines Downtown, 435 Park St., that was completed in 2018; and Athene headquarters, 7700 Mills Civic Parkway in West Des Moines, that was completed in 2015.

Over the years, Weitz has pioneered the development of precast concrete exterior wall construction and was a major producer of architectural precast concrete, according to a news release. During World War II, the company built several ammunition plants.

“Our longevity is a reflection of the trust our clients place in us and the dedication of our employees,” Kevin McClain, Weitz’s president and CEO, said in a prepared statement. “As we celebrate this significant milestone, we remain focused on our mission to provide predictable, reliable, and collaborative services that exceed client expectations.”

Weitz was acquired by Orascom Construction PLC, an Egyptian company, in 2012.
