Wells Fargo considers controversial credit cards
Wells Fargo & Co. may become the next bank to issue credit cards to customers who don’t have Social Security numbers, namely undocumented immigrants, bizjournals.com reported.
Marge Rice, Wells Fargo’s vice president of regional banking communications, said her company is exploring the possibility of issuing such cards to checking account customers who do not have Social Security numbers.
“Wells Fargo recognizes a great need for equal access to financial products and services for all customers who want to build credit, establish financial security and achieve the ‘American dream,'” Rice said. In 2001, Wells Fargo became the first financial services company in the United States to accept the Mexican Matricula Consular identification card as valid identification for opening accounts.
Wells Fargo would not be the only company to offer credit cards to illegal immigrants. Last week, Bank of America Corp. announced plans to expand a pilot credit card program throughout California’s Los Angeles County, an area heavily populated by Latinos.
