Wells Fargo tops list of green purchasers
For the first time, a corporation is number one on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Top 25 list of green purchasers. Wells Fargo & Co. claimed the top spot by purchasing 550 million kilowatt-hours, or 42 percent of its total electricity, from wind resources during the past year.
The quarterly list is composed of organizations that purchase electricity generated from clean, renewable resources such as solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact hydro. The top purchasers are collectively buying more than 4 billion kilowatt-hours of green power annually, which is equivalent to the energy needed to power more than 350,000 average American homes.
Whole Foods Market Inc. was second on the list followed by the U.S. Air Force. E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., parent company of Johnston-based Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc., was number seven. For the complete list, visit ,www.epa.gov.
