The grapevines are planted and the building is nearing completion for Jasper Winery’s Des Moines location.
“We are really excited to be moving to Des Moines,” said winery co-owner Jean Groben. “There are so many things going on, especially downtown … It is not in the middle, but close enough to be considered to be downtown.”
Located near Gray’s Lake and Water Works Park at 2400 George Flagg Parkway in Des Moines, the venue will not only be situated near downtown, but allow for a larger wine production area and space for events, such as receptions, dinners and music events.
There will be a large room for events, with a large outside area, a covered patio and indoor and outdoor fireplaces.
The sides are up for the 8,000-square-foot building and the windows are ready to go in. Currently work is being done on the electrical and plumbing systems.
Hansen Co. Inc. is the builder and Substance Architecture designed the facility. Construction began in September, and after a slow winter Groben hopes the project will be finished this month.
The winery, which is situated on five acres (three purchased by the owners and two from a “side-arm” lease from the city), is made out of a specialized type of metal.
Groben said the building will be “contemporary, with clean lines.”
Wallace-Homestead
Renovations of the Wallace-Homestead Building, an extension of Des Moines’ Central Campus facility for Central Academy, are under way.
With a $7.3 million renovation budget, work on the building located immediately west of Central Campus at 1912 Grand Ave. began in January and will “hopefully” be completed by August, before the new school year, said Bill Good, chief operation officer for the Des Moines Independent Community School District.
Academy students are currently attending classes in the John and Mary Pappajohn Education Center.
The project will include interior renovations of three floors for about 30 classrooms, including six science laboratories, general education classrooms and an art classroom. Six to eight classrooms could be added on another floor.
Wireless technology will be available throughout the building and in the classrooms. The windows will be replaced to enhance efficiency and natural light. Student gathering areas will be incorporated to the design of the building.
“It creates an extension of Central Campus immediately adjacent to it,” Good said. “It creates a direct campus feel. And we will gain 190 parking stalls with the purchase.”
