Works in progress: The Rooftop
House of Bricks owners plan to open new patio bar above existing building
For the past few weeks, J.C. Wilson and Nancy Wilson have endured a grueling process each and every day.
The two business partners, who own the live music venue House of Bricks in the East Village, are adding a patio bar to the top of the building – which will not be affiliated with the House of Bricks and will be branded differently – and are hoping to open The Rooftop in the coming weeks.
Until then, construction crews and the Wilsons arrive early each morning to tear out the tile ceiling of the House of Bricks to work on the new venue, put it back together before the lunch rush, take it apart again to work during the afternoon, and finally put it back again for evening shows.
“It’s been a lot of long days and long hours,” said J.C. Wilson. “Thank God for a lot of vendors, contractors and staff putting up with all this stuff.”
In the end, he believes the work will pay off. He said that when you get older, you start looking for the bar you would love to own, and for the Wilsons, that happens to be a rooftop bar.
After looking at other buildings to purchase in the East Village to house the bar, J.C. Wilson said he and Nancy finally settled on remodeling their current location. When the two purchased the building seven years ago, they bought it knowing they would eventually need to replace the roof, which had been deteriorating over time. The two decided to invest a little more money, fix the roof and build the bar.
“We’ve always lost business (at the House of Bricks) on nice days to patios,” J.C. Wilson said. “The food dynamic is awesome, we have a show dynamic, a reason to come here, but that got challenged by nice days, and we wanted a patio anyway.”
The Rooftop Bar will offer patrons a nice view of the East Village and an all-new menu featuring steak and signature drinks. The patio will be partially covered.
Although the Wilsons want The Rooftop to have its own identity and don’t want it to become “the House of Bricks Rooftop,” J.C. Wilson said they do hope the two businesses generate a lot of cross traffic.
“I think they will feed each other really well,” he said. “It’s a reason to come and a reason to stay.”
