Children and Family Urban Movement (CFUM) announced executive director Andy Bales will retire from the role, effective June 10. After a 20-year career in Los Angeles, Bales returned to Des Moines in December 2023 to lead the local nonprofit, which aims to create a community that supports the potential of children, youth and families. During his tenure, he led organizational expansion, launched new programming including the Lunch Bunch Reading Program, and secured additional funding sources. The CFUM board of directors has appointed current assistant executive director A.J. Salinas as his successor. The organization is also preparing to move several programs to new locations that were located at Moulton Elementary School, which will be demolished as part of Des Moines Public Schools’ Reimagining Education plan. The summer youth program will move to another elementary school and a new location for the fall after-school program is to be announced. “We are very pleased with our arrangements for summer. DMPS has been a great partner in making sure CFUM’s programs continue,” Salinas said in a prepared statement. “Transportation for some children is still a challenge but we are working with other community partners to acquire vans.”
