The West Des Moines City Council will vote today on whether to approve the rezoning of property on the northwest corner of West Lakes Parkway and Westown Parkway for the proposed Lutheran Myers Hospital. The land would need to be rezoned from professional commerce park to planned unit development for Iowa Health – Des Moines to move ahead with building plans.

The Lutheran Myers Hospital would be located in an existing office building currently occupied by Marsh Inc., which is planning a move to Urbandale. Iowa Health has said its new hospital would replace Iowa Lutheran Hospital, which it would close. Broadlawns Medical Center wants to move from its aging facilities to the Lutheran campus, which it would then upgrade.

Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines is also proposing a new hospital for West Des Moines, a short distance away at the corner of 59th Place and University Avenue. The West Des Moines City Council approved rezoning for the Mercy West Lakes Hospital at its Jan. 2 meeting. Both hospitals have already gotten the green light to proceed from the state’s Health Facilities Council, which decided unanimously Jan. 16 that the hospitals would not need to obtain the council’s authorization for their proposed relocations.
