A few months back we told you about a local woman striving to bring awareness to mental health through a movie showing. Kristin Sauter has been in the Des Moines area for about a year and has a strong passion for helping people who suffer from mental illnesses. I communicated with her Monday to get an update on tonight’s showing of “The Ripple Effect.” “I’m thrilled that the interest in the movie event has exceeded my expectations,” she said in an email. “We were originally hoping to sell 80 tickets to secure the movie, then we needed to move to a larger theater at the Fleur, and today we have exceeded 200 ticket sales.” Read more

“This affirms to me that there are significant needs and concerns surrounding mental health and suicide that we need to address in this community,” she said.

Several dozen tickets are still available. A small number are for free; you can contact Sauter if interested.

The event has evolved since we last spoke with several speakers sharing their personal experience with mental health and suicide at 7 p.m. before the movie screening. Speakers include Des Moines Police Officer Laura Garcia, local suicide awareness advocate Vivian Masters, and KCCI’s Steve Karlin will serve as the emcee.
