Riverfront skate sculpture to spell ‘wow’
Community leaders have long said that the Lauridsen Skatepark would give a “wow” factor to the metro and its developing riverfront adventure park. Now they want to spell it out in 12-foot-high letters in metal that skateboarders could use during their trips through the park. Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt of R&R Studios in Miami have designed the work, which would be 80 feet long, 12 feet high and 4 feet wide. Marquardt said it was refreshing. “Whenever we do a project, the first question we are asked is how do we prevent people from skating on your sculpture,” she said in a statement. “Here, we have the reverse and they are telling us to do a sculpture that is skateable — designing “WOW” was completely liberating and fun to do.” The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines is providing $250,000 for the work, which still must be approved by the Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation and the Des Moines City Council.
