Oakridge receives $95K grant from Northwest Area Foundation

Oakridge Neighborhood has been awarded a $95,000 grant from the Northwest Area Foundation. According to a news release, the foundation funds “champions of change,” who reflect the distinct strengths of the group’s region. The release states that the Northwest Area Foundation seeks to address communities that face poverty in some of the nation’s wealthiest and fastest growing cities. It focuses on diverse communities to help people get better jobs and equip them with the skills to feel more secure and hopeful. Oakridge Neighborhood is one of Des Moines’ most diverse neighborhoods, with 66% of its residents being immigrants and refugees from more than 23 countries, speaking more than 29 languages. It provides services ranging from childcare and pre-school and after school programs, workforce readiness, financial literacy, parenting, citizenship and driver’s education. The Northwest Area Foundation, founded by the Great Northern Railway, serves Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Washington and the 76 native nations in those same states.
