Majority of Iowa Index stocks rose in November
Thirteen out of 21 Iowa-based companies posted gains for the month of November. One remained unchanged. Seven posted losses in the month.
Four companies posted double-digit percentage gains: EMC Insurance Group Inc. with a 33.42 percent gain, KemPharm Inc. with an 18.52 percent gain, Art’s Way Manufacturing Co. with a 12.21 percent gain and Meredith Corp. with an 11.06 percent gain.
Two companies posted double-digit percentage losses in November. Lee Enterprises Inc. was down 16.10 percent, and Renewable Energy Group Inc. was down 13.29 percent.
The merger between Rockwell Collins Inc. and United Technologies Corp. was finalized on Nov. 26. The price listed in the table is Rockwell Collins’ closing price on that date.
Beginning next month, United Technologies will be listed here as a company with Iowa operations, but because it is not based in the state, it will not be part of the Iowa Index (those companies in bold type in the list). The removal reduces the number of companies in our Iowa Index by one.
The Iowa Index, an unweighted average price of what is now 21 Iowa-based public companies, decreased by 8.38 percent from October and was down 16.26 percent on a year-over-year basis, the Business Record’s monthly snapshot of Iowa companies shows. The removal of Rockwell Collins played a role in the overall decrease of the Iowa Index as that company was up 10.17 percent.
By comparison, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 1.68 percent during the month and 5.22 percent from a year ago. The Nasdaq gained 0.34 percent during the month and 6.64 percent from a year ago.
The Iowa-based companies that make up the Iowa Index are in bold in this list of companies with sizable operations in the state.
