Wells Fargo & Co. will provide a $200,000 grant under its NeighborhoodLift revitalization program for the 6th Avenue Corridor Streetscape project along Sixth Avenue between Hickman Road and Interstate 235 in Des Moines, according to a release. The multi-phase project is intended to improve the area for residents and businesses through streetscape improvements that include a lane reduction to calm traffic, wider sidewalks, a multi-modal path to accommodate bicyclists and bioretention cells to filter stormwater. Trees, dedicated parking, bus shelters, benches, public art and new lighting will be added. The $4.7 million NeighborhoodLift program is an effort to create 250 homeowners and revitalize neighborhoods. So far, the program has assisted 85 homeowners through down payment assistance grants and home buyer education. Another 165 home buyers are in the process of purchasing a home through the program, which is a collaboration with NeighborWorks America and its local affiliate, Neighborhood Finance Corp. Construction on phase 1 of the streetscape project is scheduled to begin March 1.
