NAIC launches series examining cures for rising health care costs
Annual health care expenditures in the United States have topped $3.2 trillion, and consumer health care expenses are now the largest share of household spending. A new report series from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, “Rising Health Care Costs: Drivers, Challenges and Solutions,” will examine effective ways to address spiraling costs. The first report, released with an executive summary for the series, examines the importance of nutrition in lowering U.S. health care costs and is titled “Food Is Medicine: Why Healthier Eating Should Be a Priority for Health Care Providers, Insurers and Government.” The NAIC plans to release six additional reports in the future, addressing the underlying factors driving health care costs; regional cost variations; the rise of prescription drug prices; the growing acceptance of value-based reimbursement; administrative costs; and the role of data analytics in the health care system.
