Hy-Vee stores in the Des Moines metro area are launching a donation campaign this week to raise funds for local organizations supporting racial unity and equality, Hy-Vee announced on Monday. The campaign is in addition to corporate donations made by the West Des Moines-based grocer on Friday, when Hy-Vee announced that two local nonprofits — the Evelyn K. Davis Center and Urban Dreams — and the Des Moines branch of the NAACP will receive a combined $150,000. The local donation campaign will let Hy-Vee customers donate any dollar amount during checkout. Proceeds will go toward Hy-Vee’s philanthropic One Step program, which will distribute funds to the Des Moines organization Starts Right Here. The initiatives are part of Hy-Vee’s commitment to donating $1 million in funds and 1 million volunteer hours to organizations working directly toward racial equity. Including a “Stuff-a-Truck” food campaign in the Minnesota Twin Cities last week, Hy-Vee has so far donated $470,000 toward its $1 million commitment.
