KCCI-TV: The Indianola City Council voted unanimously on Monday to remove Native American imagery from city property, including the police department’s cars, badges and patches. Council members said they received dozens of emails and letters from both sides, but there was enough concern to make a change. Indianola resident Deb Schiel-Larson, who led the charge for changing the so-called “Indian head logo,” said the request was spurred by a conversation with friends. “Our Ojibwe friend said, ‘I’m not coming. I wouldn’t come. I’m not going to visit you in Indianola anymore,’ ” Schiel-Larson said. Use of Native American imagery is long-standing in Iowa and Indianola. Simpson College dropped the “Redmen” name from its sports teams in 1992.
