Former Des Moines Councilman Tom Vlassis dies

The Des Moines native had a degree in pharmacy from Drake University and owned multiple pharmacies across the metro with partners. He was first elected to the Des Moines City Council in April 1989, representing Ward 1 until he was defeated for reelection in 2010. Vlassis had been on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission for five years prior to being elected to the city council. He was also involved in international cultural and educational programs. During his time serving the Des Moines community, he served on the Regional Workforce Investment Board, the Central Iowa Employment and Training Consortium, the United Way of Central Iowa, and the Steering Committee on Community and Economic Development.
