Residents of the Polk County side of Urbandale will vote Aug. 6 on whether to approve a local option sales and service tax that would add 1 cent to the state’s 6-cents-on-the dollar sales tax. The City Council approved placing the issue before voters during Tuesday’s meeting. In November 2017, Urbandale’s Dallas County residents approved the sales tax increase as part of a countywide vote. Voters in Waukee, West Des Moines and Clive also approved the measure in 2017. Urbandale City Manager A.J. Johnson said the city receives about $1.1 million in revenue as a result, enabling it to shorten the terms of an approximately $6 million bond issue to build a new fire station and fueling station to seven years. Approval among the city’s Polk County residents will generate an additional $6 million. Under state law, 50% of the revenues must be used for property tax relief. Urbandale uses the other 50% for capital improvement projects.
