Central College in Pella is adding new club sports for the 2019-20 school year, including men’s volleyball and women’s bowling with the possibility of both soon becoming varsity sports. Men’s volleyball and women’s bowling continue to be emerging intercollegiate sports, the result of increased participation at the high school level, the college said in a release. Nine colleges in Iowa currently offer a varsity men’s volleyball program, including eight members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Des Moines hosted the inaugural NAIA men’s national championships in 2019 and will do so again in 2020. Five NAIA member colleges in Iowa have women’s bowling teams, as of 2018-19.
