And it can be a bigger problem for users who have been around a while. “If that [hacked] user’s been on the platform for a couple of years, [the social media company] is much less likely to take action against them than they are against a brand-new, freshly created account,” says Kevin Gosschalk, CEO of Arkose Labs. Some of the takeovers are to spread misinformation, while others try to get money with offers, some of which can’t be printed in a family business publication. Then there’s the new fake accounts the scammers create — accounting for 25% of all new social media accounts.
